Story
The story
Nolan runs the office lunch order on a strict fifteen-dollar per diem, spending his own lunch hours in the July heat to find a spot that is cheap, spotless and farm-to-table fresh. When a new intern, Parker, declares the food toxic waste and rallies the department behind hundred-and-fifty-dollar Wagyu bentos, the team dumps Nolan's lunches in the trash. Worse, his girlfriend of three years, Sienna, stands beside Parker's desk and calls Nolan's thrift embarrassing, then knocks his lunch down the front of his shirt.
Nolan hands Parker the catering job outright. Parker adds sixty-dollar cake slices, forty-dollar pour-over coffee and imported strawberries to the tab, and the office cheers him on. Nolan types that he cannot afford it, and the channel turns on him. When Parker spills hot coffee grounds over Nolan's hand in the breakroom, blistering his skin, Sienna blames Nolan for making a scene and demands he apologise.
Every lunch above the hard limit is deducted from the employee's paycheck, and the last Friday of the month is coming.

The new intern had clearly consumed too many "Day in the Life of a Tech CEO" TikToks. He was dead set on convincing the entire department that the corporate lunches I catered were practically toxic waste.
"Nobody with an ounce of self-respect eats fifteen-dollar mystery meat," Parker announced, his voice carrying over the hum of the open-plan office. "It’s highly processed garbage cooked in cheap grease. When everyone’s cholesterol spikes and we all get sick, who’s paying the medical bills?"
