Story

The story

The night before the grad school recommendation list is posted, a video of Demi Nicholson sneaking into the archives to alter evaluation scores spreads across campus. The security footage shows her face, the access log records her student ID, and the university brands her a cheater. Expelled and publicly humiliated, she watches the empty slot go to her best friend, Jessica Morin.

Only her childhood friend, Ethan Jackson, stands by her, even offering marriage. The night before the wedding, she overhears Jessica and Ethan laughing about the tampered access log and the faked video, and realizes the frame-up was their design all along.

She opens her eyes again on the evening before the video is released. This time she lets Jessica borrow her student ID and quietly swaps a photo inside their face model dataset, so that the disciplinary hearing may play a very different video.

Opening excerpt

The night before the grad school recommendation list drops, a video of me sneaking into the archives to alter evaluation scores goes viral across campus.

The security footage clearly shows my face, and the access log records my student ID.

Overnight, the entire university brands me a cheater. Cruel taunts and insults rain down from every corner.

No matter how hard I try to explain, nobody buys a word of it. In the end, I'm expelled, and my parents are forced to apologize in public.
