Story
The story
Willa, an undergraduate with only a year of pre-med behind her, is about to leave the valley for the city when her boyfriend Kirk pounds on her door, begging her to deliver his sister Bridget's baby. Before she can open the latch, glowing lines of text appear in the air, warning her that Bridget took an abortifacient days ago, that the child is already dead, and that she is being set up as the scapegoat so Bridget can take her transfer papers.
Bridget, married to the councilman's son Clyde, has lost her own chance at relocation. Kirk pressures Willa with guilt and threats, and Clyde, feared throughout the hollow, drags her to his estate by the throat, vowing to destroy her permit if the birth goes wrong. The hovering warnings insist she must not touch Bridget, and that only proof buried under the compost heap can expose the truth.
Willa stalls, forcing Clyde to see that she is no obstetrician and that Kirk lied about her skills. The confrontation turns violent, but the danger of the delivery still hangs over her.
