Story
The story
At a joint bachelor-bachelorette party, a round of the King's Game turns cruel when Bianca draws the crown card and orders Phoebe to interview for the role of mistress, with the groom judging her answers. Griffin, Phoebe's fiancé, backs the game as a house rule, and Bianca lays out conditions that strip Phoebe of presents, of his time, and of her name should a child ever come. The room laughs, phones record, and Phoebe's protests are dismissed as a temper she cannot control.
When Phoebe says she is dropping out of the wedding, Griffin and Bianca refuse to let the game end, treating her refusal as a failed application and a scene in the street. Griffin insists she is too rigid and dependent to leave, and Bianca claims the wedding belongs to the winner. Humiliated and ordered into the back seat, Phoebe must decide whether she can still walk away.
Opening excerpt
She twirled the plastic card between two manicured fingers, eyes glittering. "Now hiring: one side piece. Number four, step up for the interview. The groom and I will decide if you make the cut."
I turned my card over. The bold black number staring back at me was a four.
Instantly, phones shot into the air.
"Look at that—the bride interviewing to be the mistress!" someone whooped from the velvet couch. "Get this on video!
