Story

The story

Tessa Mercer and Yvonne Carter have shared a birthday game since childhood: each year one borrows something from the other for twenty-four hours. Yvonne has never refused. At Tessa's thirtieth birthday party, she points past the gifts at Xavier Dalton, Yvonne's husband, and asks to borrow him for a day. The guests laugh, but Yvonne says no. Xavier wipes his fingers, stands, and leaves with Tessa anyway, telling Yvonne not to make things awkward.

He returns the next evening, damp-haired and wearing perfume, with Tessa beside him. She holds out Yvonne's wedding ring, saying it got in the way. Xavier admits they had both been drinking, and when Yvonne asks whether Tessa already knew he would agree, Tessa says he knew before she even asked. Xavier calls it a way to find out whether Yvonne really loves him.

Yvonne throws his clothes into the hall and orders them both out, but the question of what the two of them arranged behind her back is left hanging.
