Story

The story

Madelaine Goode has spent five years in Annsberg, far from her own hometown, to stay near Sebastian Ross, an internist at Annsberg General Hospital. When her mother secretly checks in there with Stage II stomach cancer, Maddie asks Sebastian to watch over her while she rushes back. He refuses, busy helping his childhood friend Suzy, a new intern at the same hospital. For more than twenty days he never visits, though her ward on the thirteenth floor lies a short walk from his office on the seventeenth.

Maddie endures the wait for surgery, the cold excuses, and the overheard talk of a delayed operation, until she finally ends the relationship by message and sees her mother off alone. Sebastian calls, furious and uncomprehending, then cancels again for Suzy's dog. As Maddie packs up her life to go home, her coworkers surprise her with a farewell party and a gift of money for her mother's treatment.

Then Sebastian appears at the restaurant, holding Suzy's puppy, carrying a fish dish he has always hated.

On the first day of her stay, he did not come because he had taken a day off. His childhood friend was moving, and she needed his help.
