The Dice Game I Could Never Win

A woman has spent a year losing every decision to a dice roll her boyfriend, Julian Wade, insists is fair. When a holiday vote between her dream of Aspen and her best friend Chloe Dawson's wish for Miami goes the same way, she discovers the truth on his tablet: a loaded dice plugin, and a message in which he admits the game is the only way to handle her. Aspen was the trip her late mother never took, a promise Julian once made to her himself.

She says nothing. She leaves the group chat, books a one-way ticket, and quietly packs winter clothes while Julian fills a suitcase with beach gear for Chloe. He buys her a dress in Chloe's size, hands her career opportunity to Chloe at a gala, and calls her understanding for accepting it. When a single pitch to Mr. Vance is decided by the dice again, she refuses to roll, and Julian taps the screen for her.

Seven years together have come down to a rigged game she can no longer pretend to believe in.
