Story

The story

On Halloween, a family day trip turns into a nightmare when a mother realizes her daughter is missing. As she frantically calls the police, her mother-in-law contradicts every word, telling the officers the child was left behind and that her daughter-in-law is mentally ill. The woman knows the truth: her mother-in-law has a long habit of Halloween pranks, and this one is spiraling out of control.

When the officers finally begin to search, the older woman produces a faked screenshot and then claims the missing child is only a dog, turning the crowd against the mother. She then accuses her of abuse and insists the girl was sent back to her real mother. The mother fights to prove the child is her own, even as her mother-in-law twists an old scar into evidence against her.

Security footage reveals the grandmother pulling the girl behind the car, and the trunk she claims hid the child is empty. With the girl still missing and her asthma making every minute count, the search presses on.

Opening excerpt

On Halloween, our family went on a day trip. But somewhere along the way, we realized our daughter was missing.

I called the police in a panic. When the officers arrived, I had barely explained what happened before my mother-in-law contradicted me.

“You didn’t even bring your daughter. You left her at your mother’s house. Why are you calling the police?”

The officer paused, then his expression turned stern.
