Story
The story
After a biopsy confirms his cancer has returned, Adam boils instant noodles with five eggs and tells Miranda that their five years together are over. She barely reacts, and moments later a crowd of wealthy women sweeps into their shabby home with champagne, celebrating Miranda's return to her old life. Brett Hastings follows, smug and certain that Adam was only ever after money. Miranda reveals a diamond bracelet and offers Adam ninety-five thousand dollars, every cent he paid toward her debts over two years of grueling work. He refuses it.
Adam knows what Miranda does not: her ruin was a test of his loyalty, and his body gave out three days before her deadline. He also remembers the surgery he cancelled and the money he sent when she begged him for help, believing her tears were gratitude.
Miranda announces her engagement to Brett and promises to send a cleaning crew for the cottage. Adam simply thanks her, certain he will not be there to need it.
Opening excerpt
Miranda leaned against the chipped laminate counter, watching the yellow yolks set against the broth. A dry, amused smirk played on her lips. "Eating like a king tonight. Are we suddenly rich, or are we just not planning on surviving until the end of the month?"
My fingers curled around the folded pathology report tucked deep inside my denim jacket.
