Story
The story
On the eve of freshman orientation, Willa Barrett's boyfriend Keaton brings his best friend Mackenzie, the student body president, to dinner at a members-only club. Mackenzie spends the evening dissecting Willa's clothes, her manners and her background, hinting that a girl with no pedigree is only angling for a rich backer. Keaton does not defend her; he echoes Mackenzie's doubts and asks where her money comes from.
When Willa says she is a Sumner, Mackenzie laughs it off, claiming to have dated Archer Sumner for two years and never heard of a sister. Willa points out that the Sumner son carries their father's name while the daughter carries their mother's maiden name, Barrett, and the table turns uneasy. Keaton demands she clear her name for the sake of his family, and Willa walks out.
At home, a familiar voice greets her with a single question about the breakup.
