Story
The story
Sam's roommate Kaitlyn lives by a single creed: whatever you fear most will find you. Convinced she is curing Sam through exposure therapy, she shoves her into the campus reflection pond, dumps unwashed socks over her face as she sleeps, and finally orders live roach egg capsules to hide beneath Sam's bed frame. Each act comes wrapped in a saintly smile and the claim that she is only doing it out of love.
Sam sees through the performance. She calls it what it is—harassment dressed up as devotion—and when Kaitlyn flees in tears, Sam sweeps every egg case from beneath her own bed and tips the whole haul under Kaitlyn's box spring instead. Then she heads to her evening seminar, where the lights cut out the moment she steps through the door and a hidden terror of darkness takes hold.
When the lights snap back on, the hall is laughing, and Kaitlyn is watching from the back row with a smile. Sam has to decide how far she will go to answer a kindness that keeps drawing blood.
Opening excerpt
The first time happened when she realized I couldn’t swim. As we were walking past the campus reflection pond, she shoved me straight into the murky, weed-choked water. I inhaled half the pond before someone fished me out, choking and blue-lipped, on the verge of drowning.
The second time, she noticed my borderline-clinical germaphobia. Her solution was to dump a mountain of her own sour, unwashed socks—months of sweat fermented into stiff fabric—directly onto my face while I slept.
