Story

The story

On Valentine's Day, Serena arrives at a seafood restaurant to find her boyfriend, Cody Sharp, and her best friend, Irene Thorne, already eating — with no chair saved for her. Though Serena is allergic to seafood, she has always taken medication just to keep them company at this spot. This time she walks out, sits down alone at a barbecue joint next door, and cancels the self-funded study abroad application she had planned around staying with them.

Cody and Irene, both top students with funded places overseas, keep leaving her behind: a couples' beer contest, a drunk Irene carried home in his arms, a shared breakfast chosen to suit Irene, and a class project the two claim as their own. Cody calls her jealousy cute and tells her not to overthink it, while her advisor, Aimee Griffith, asks whether she truly means to withdraw.

Serena begins to see how long she has been the one making room for the other two.

Opening excerpt

I reach for a chair, only to realize there isn't an extra one.

Cody glances up at me and says flatly, "Staff said they only have tables for two left. A table for three means a four-hour wait. Just find a table for one. It's all the same."

Irene offers an apologetic look. "Besides, Serena, aren't you allergic to seafood? Maybe grab a bite somewhere else?"

I freeze.

We have eaten at this exact spot 30 times.

I am allergic to seafood, but since they love it, this is always the place.
