Story

The story

Lauren Joyner, the housekeeper's daughter, arrives at the Faulkner family home convinced she is the gentle, put-upon heroine of a beloved novel. Within minutes of being shown inside, she weeps over the family's wealth, accuses the eldest son Jude of scheming to take her by force, and warns the youngest daughter, Isla, not to compete with her for a man.

Isla answers with a smile, offering Lauren the storage room instead of the guest room, since a girl with a heart of gold surely could not bear such luxury. Lauren's tears and protests only deepen the household's disbelief, and even her mother's rescue of the family matriarch cannot make her delusions make sense to anyone.

At school the next day, Lauren pours milk over Rhett Crawford and demands an apology, unaware of how close she is to real danger. Isla steps in before his fist lands, and Lauren promptly accuses her of orchestrating the whole thing.

Opening excerpt

Nathaniel Zimmer, the butler, has barely brought Lauren inside the house when she suddenly starts crying at the sight of the lavish interior.

Colton Faulkner, my second-oldest brother, is startled. "What's the matter with you?"

Lauren forces a pained expression and says, "I-It's nothing. I just couldn't help thinking about people who don't even have enough to eat when I saw how lavishly you all live. If it were up to me, I'd never spend this much money on a house!"

She retreats in a panic when Jude Faulkner, my oldest brother, stands up.
