A week before her wedding, Elena's fiancé Matteo has two jewelry sets delivered and lets her sister Viola choose first: a sapphire set bought at auction in Europe, and a black pearl necklace the jeweler threw in for free. When Elena asks to choose first for once, Matteo tells her Viola represents the Bellani family and needs the sapphires, while Elena doesn't care about such things anyway.

It is the same pattern she has known for more than twenty years. Viola took the sugar flower from their birthday cake, the striking gowns, the speeches Elena wrote, and even Matteo's proposal, which he offered to Viola before turning to Elena.
