Story
The story
The day before Jesse and Lauren were to register their marriage, she walked into City Hall with Brandon instead. Standing around the corner, Jesse overheard her call it a fake marriage — a last wish for Brandon's dying mother, to be undone by divorce within a month. She was certain Jesse, who had waited seven years, would not leave over a single month. He cancelled the reservation and left without confronting her.
Lauren told him nothing until he already knew, brushing it off as a formality and a debt of gratitude. That night, Brandon was resting in the condo Jesse had paid for, wearing his slippers and holding his mug, while Lauren asked Jesse to let him stay. A photo of the two beside a hospital bed, a marriage certificate in view, spread among their friends.
Jesse sits at the dinner table, untouched food before him, as Brandon's phone rings and his mother asks to see them on video. Lauren's hand freezes mid-air, and Jesse lifts his head to look at her.
Opening excerpt
The day before we were supposed to register our marriage, my fiancée took her papers and walked into City Hall with Brandon instead.
I stood around the corner of the corridor, listening to her phone call on speaker. Her friend’s frantic voice bled through the receiver.
"What about Jesse?"
"You two have been together for seven years. Are you seriously marrying another man?"
