Story
The story
Julian Reed and the narrator were childhood sweethearts, bound by years of shared hardship. She wore his only down jacket; he wore her only scarf. They shared a plate of egg fried rice and slept under the same quilt. He danced night after night to pay her college tuition, and later borrowed from friends to gather her dowry. She believed they would be together forever.
Then, in a dilapidated rental apartment, she saw him shirtless, bending to pick up another woman's underwear. He said he wanted freedom, and that she was his biggest lack of freedom. The day he left, she gave him a kite and wished him freedom.
Years later, a hospital calls using Julian's phone. He has been in a car accident. She rushes over, but at his ward door she hears a woman's coquettish voice and his familiar reply. She pays his fees and flees. When they finally meet in the corridor, he calls her only someone from his hometown.
Opening excerpt
We depended on each other as we grew up. He said he liked to wander, so I wandered with him.
I thought we would be together forever.
Until, in that dilapidated rental apartment, I saw Julian shirtless with my own eyes, bending down to pick up another woman's underwear.
I asked him why. He didn't answer, just told the woman to get dressed and leave.
After a long time, he said he wanted freedom.
And I was his biggest lack of freedom.
The day he left, I gave him a kite.
I said, "I wish you freedom."
