Story
The story
Eighteen years after she vanished into foster care, Nelly is returned to the Wellesley estate, semi-mute and stuttering from years of neglect. Coral hands Shirley a brochure for a private language reform camp, and Shirley signs the enrollment and liability waiver that same morning. In the Oregon wilderness, twelve-hour vocal drills, starvation, and a heated iron rod are used to force a voice out of Nelly. When she calls home begging to be saved, Coral whispers that her words are finally forming, and Shirley tells her to stay until she can speak like a normal daughter.
With the final evaluation looming and The Quiet Room waiting, Nelly's only ally, Talia, presses a brass key into her palm and tells her to run tonight.
