Story

The story

Cooper Mitchell steps in when his wife's secretary, Steven Jackson, is caught abusing an injured puppy. A bystander's video makes Cooper a hero online, and Steven loses his job. Cooper believes his wife, Tessa Curran, has finally seen Steven for what he is, so he prepares a candlelit dinner for her. The wine she hands him leaves him unconscious.

He wakes inside a dog breeding facility, surrounded by starving Shiba Inus with glowing green eyes. Tessa tells him that since he loves protecting dogs, he can stay with a pack that has not eaten in a week. Steven livestreams it all, mocking him, while Tessa demands he kneel and publicly confess that he framed Steven. Cooper refuses.

When the cages open, the pack attacks. Cooper fights back with a metal rod to survive, and the livestream turns against him. Tessa offers to free him if he kneels and admits fault. He refuses again, even as the dogs tear into him.

Opening excerpt

Someone in the crowd recorded everything and posted it online. In no time, I was hailed as a hero by animal lovers across the internet. At the same time, her secretary, Steven Jackson, became the face of cruelty and perversion.

Under public pressure, the company had no choice but to fire him. My wife had always been especially fond of Steven; no matter what happened between us, she would always defend him without question.

But this time, she didn’t blame me.
