The story
At twenty-three, Evelyn Carter lost her sight saving Adrian Sinclair from a falling billboard. He swore to be her crutch and her eyes, holding her hand wherever she went, and she believed him. On their wedding day he tells her the groom waits on stage and she must walk in alone. Groping forward, she trips on the steps; blood runs down her forehead and her sight returns. There is no banquet, no guests, no Adrian — only an abandoned factory, his friends filming her for him, and his voice on a recording made in advance. Chloe Bennett, his secretary, has given him a son, and the wedding is hers.
Evelyn hides that she can see. She hears his friends mock her as a burden, watches Chloe's custom gown and the diamond ring, and learns the amulet she knelt 999 steps to obtain was thrown away as cheap street vendor stuff. Left alone at the hospital, she sends a message to a familiar number.
