Story

The story

Lucas has forgotten Jane's birthday for the third time, so she quietly cooks her own favorite meal and buys an ice cream cake. When she steps out of the shower, the kitchen is ransacked: her dinner is packed into containers and her cake lies smashed, because Kate's blood sugar crashed and Lucas is taking the food to her. Minutes after he leaves, the landlord asks whether the couple will renew the lease. Jane says they will not, and that the deposit should go back to Lucas alone.

She messages a leasing agent for a one-bedroom apartment, just for herself, and arranges movers for three days from now. Lucas calls to ask her to cook Kate a light soup, then admits he forgot her birthday because it is the anniversary of the day he met Kate twenty-three years ago. He later offers her a pink car as a makeup gift, chosen by Kate, and asks her to let Kate have it first.

In five years, Lucas has celebrated Jane's birthday only twice, and his phone holds a hundred and twenty photos of Kate. Jane hangs up on him, keeps packing, and answers his request with a flat agreement.

Opening excerpt

This was the third time Lucas forgot my birthday.

I didn't throw a fit. Instead, I quietly cooked my favorite meal and bought an expensive ice cream cake I'd normally never splurge on. It was a quiet celebration for a day that apparently mattered to no one but me.

But when I stepped out of the shower, ready to finally enjoy my evening, I found the kitchen ransacked. The dinner I'd spent three hours preparing had been packed into insulated containers.
