Story

The story

A gravely ill mother is nursed back to health by her son Harper and his wife Kate, who spend their entire savings and sell their new home to pay for her treatment. Kate even quits her job to care for her day and night.

Once recovered, the mother signs all her property over to her daughter Ramona, who only phoned occasionally and vacationed in Thailand during the illness. When Harper and Kate protest, she accuses them of scheming for her property and throws them out, refusing even to lend them money for rice. Kate, pregnant and exhausted, suffers a miscarriage.

Years later, the mother lies dying and calls Harper back for her funeral, while Ramona has gambled away everything. Harper and Kate return wealthy, but not to mourn.

Opening excerpt

After I recovered, I signed over all my property to my daughter.

To my surprise, my daughter-in-law was not pleased.

I told her, "While I was sick, my daughter called to check on me every other day. She's so devoted. What's wrong with me giving her the house?"

My son and his wife questioned me, their voices shaking with anger. "We cared for you day and night, spent tens of thousands of dollars on your treatment, and that doesn't even compare to a few phone calls?"
