Story

The story

When a German client's urgent order lands, the boss of a small factory knows it is the only thing keeping fifty workers employed. The deadline is brutal: delivery on the first day after May Day. He offers five times the normal wage for holiday overtime, completely voluntary, and posts it in the company group chat.

The group stays silent. In the break room, Ethan, a college intern hired last month, urges everyone to ignore the offer, and Old Mike, a five-year veteran, agrees. Ethan screenshots the message and posts it online, where netizens brand the boss heartless. The workers then demand ten times pay. The boss shows them the ledger: the order's total profit is only five hundred thousand, and five-times wages would cut forty thousand from it. Ethan throws the ledger to the floor and refuses to budge.

The next morning the boss announces the whole company is on holiday, no overtime allowed, and the order has been outsourced to Mr. Brooks's factory next door. The workers panic, but Ethan calls it a bluff and goes live.

Opening excerpt

I solemnly stamped the company seal on the contract.

The two-million deposit hit the company’s corporate account the next second.

I let out a long breath.

Because there were no orders, the factory had already been shut down for a full half month.

The profit from this order was enough to support the fifty workers in the factory for half a year.

The only deadly problem was how tight the deadline was.

The client insisted the goods had to be delivered on time on the first day after May Day.
