Story

The story

Chloe returns home for summer break and finds a man in her kitchen who cooks her favorite meal and calls her sweetheart. His face is not her father's, yet his mannerisms, his memories and his nagging are identical to Arthur Miller's. Terrified, she secretly calls the police and reports that someone is posing as her father.

Detective Marcus Kane takes the call and tells her to act normal until officers arrive. To test the stranger, Chloe mentions her mother's death anniversary, knowing her mother abandoned the family years ago. The man answers correctly, revealing a secret only her real father knew. When the police arrive, his driver's license bears Arthur Miller's name and the stranger's face, and neighbors greet Chloe by name.

She no longer knows who she is or what happened to her father.

As he ladled a bowl of homemade soup for me, he smiled warmly.

"I made this especially for you, sweetheart. Quick, try some!"

But looking at that gentle, smiling face, my blood ran cold.

I fought back the sheer terror, slipped my phone under the table, and secretly dialed 91

"I need to report an emergency," I whispered.

"I think someone is pretending to be my father."

"And..."

I stared at the kitchen, where the man was slowly turning his head toward me. My voice trembled violently.

"I think my real father might already be dead."
