Story

The story

Natalie has endured ninety-nine ovarian stimulation injections and three years of IVF, all to give Adrian Sterling the child his azoospermia made impossible. On the day of her final embryo transfer, Adrian is in Switzerland, free-soloing a cliff to rescue his first love, Sophie Lane. He never signs the consent form, and the last viable embryo is destroyed.

When Adrian returns to New York, he brings Sophie into their townhouse and orders Natalie to surrender the master bedroom to her. He dismisses the lost embryo as replaceable, and Sophie's careful words about his condition cut deepest of all. Natalie's love curdles into hate, and she begins to plan a death that is not real.

Two years after she vanishes, Adrian finds her again. Beside another man, she smiles and offers an introduction he never expected.

I clutched my phone. The screen showed I'd called him 99 times.
