Story
The story
At seventeen, June Bradford is finally brought home by the biological parents who lost her years ago. Her instinct for numbers once led police to a kidnapper's stash house and freed six children; it has also gotten her sent away from every foster home since. On the limestone porch of the family's gated enclave, Brielle, the daughter adopted to fill June's place, fumbles the keypad and lets the door stay shut.
Inside, June counts what others would rather she didn't: an empty portrait frame gone uncleaned for years, five place settings at a table for six, and a storage room offered as her bedroom. Her brother Connor calls her arithmetic cruel; her parents look away. Brielle's tears arrive on cue, and every apology is staged for an audience.
June answers with a notebook, a tick mark, and a name taped to a door. The family's welcome has rules she can measure, and she intends to count every one.

When I was five, a kidnapper dumped me on a desolate stretch of dirt road on the outskirts of the city. I didn’t cry. Instead, I cataloged the journey in my head: seventeen speed bumps, two blasts from a freight train’s horn, and the rumble of a city bus that passed on an exact nine-minute loop. Using those intervals, I led the state troopers straight back to the stash house. When they pulled six other trembling children out of that basement, the detective patted my shoulder and called me a little mathematician.
