Story

The story

Theo and Sandra grew up together and married after years apart, but their anniversary plans collapse when Sandra rushes to the hospital bedside of Shawn Moore, an old college suitor who says he is dying of cancer. Theo watches his wife embrace another man and tell him she will not leave him.

Shawn claims the living can never compete with the dead, and Theo is left with a frayed friendship bracelet hidden among Sandra's jewelry and the memory of promises she once made. When he quietly cancels their trip, Sandra accuses him of being glad his rival is dying.

As Sandra clings to him and begs not to be left alone, Theo must decide whether the love he fought years to keep was ever truly his.

Opening excerpt

Sandra's ex-boyfriend had cancer, yet he still found the energy to keep pestering her. So I anonymously sent him a sum of money to make him leave her alone.

But when Sandra found what I'd done, she threw the bank card in my face and shouted, "Why would you humiliate a dying man with money? He's already pitiful enough!"

I looked at her calmly. "You're my wife. You shouldn't be worrying about another man."
