Story

The story

At a private party, Nelly bites into a cherry pie and finds the hidden gold coin. In her previous life, that coin made her Clark Mercer's girlfriend for a month, then his wife, and finally a dying woman poisoned by the supplements he gave her while he loved her half-sister, Caroline Reed. Now she has woken back on the same day, and the disgust in Clark's eyes tells her he remembers everything too. She spits the coin into the trash and says she found nothing, letting Clark claim Caroline instead.

Nelly is a soldier of the Family, the daughter of Vincent Reed, one of Clark's most trusted men, and she is still paying for her father's dialysis. Clark warns her to behave and stay out of his way, certain she cannot survive without his protection. She refuses him and asks her father to send her résumé to the Don's second son, Matthew Russo, the heir who was kidnapped years ago and has only just returned.

Caroline, triumphant, invites Nelly to move into Clark's villa to watch the new couple. Nelly accepts, but not for the reason Caroline thinks.

Opening excerpt

In my previous life, Clark Mercer, the Family's underboss, had made a joke at his private party.

Whoever found the gold coin in their pie could be his girlfriend for a month.

I wanted an excuse to stay by his side, so I bribed the chef to mark the right slice and made sure I got it.

Within that month, I got pregnant with his child and used the pregnancy to get him to marry me.

But after giving birth, my health declined rapidly.

Within a year, the doctors told me I was dying.

On my deathbed, Clark held my hand.
