Story

The story

Nora can hear a name whispered inside a person's heartbeat when she is close enough, and Bennett's heart has murmured hers since he was thirteen, through their first apartment, their wedding night, and three years of marriage.

On the morning of their third anniversary, his heartbeat splits: Nora, Piper, Nora, Piper. Piper Hughes is a new hire at his hotel, and soon his pulse belongs to her more than to his wife. When Nora confronts him, Bennett calls her gift a childhood game and insists he is not scared of anything.

Opening excerpt

I can hear the name whispered inside a man’s heartbeat.

It isn't a metaphor. It isn't poetry.

If I am close enough—chest pressed against chest, close enough that our breathing tangles—the rhythm of a person’s heart begins to articulate a name. Not everyone has one. Some people’s chests beat in hollow, barren rhythms, naming no one at all. Some pulse with the steady, quiet ache of a parent, a child, or a ghost long buried.
