The Final Prescription

Scarlett has been told she has six months to live. Her mother moves into her apartment, cooking and fussing over her, and Scarlett believes she has finally found the motherly love she craved. Then she reads the messages on her mother's phone: her brother Caleb is told to keep his girlfriend steady, because once Scarlett dies the apartment will be his.

Scarlett tells her mother the diagnosis was a misdiagnosis and the growth is benign. Her mother's ladle clatters into the pot, and she insists on another hospital, then urges Scarlett to hand over her apartment and savings for safekeeping. When Scarlett refuses, her mother sneers at her unmarried, childless life and reminds her of Old Man Miller, the wealthy widower she once refused. Scarlett opens the door and calls building security.

Her mother wails in the hallway that her ungrateful daughter is throwing her out, while the neighbours and guards watch. Scarlett says she does not know her. The childhood beatings, the stolen meat and the words money-loser return, and Scarlett stands her ground.
