Story
The story
When her father-in-law needs a kidney transplant, Karen Cobb's in-laws settle the choice between her son Leo Abbott and his cousin with coin-filled dumplings. Karen bites a coin on her first dumpling, yet her husband Leigh James and his family insist the draw was fair, offering her five hundred dollars for Leo's kidney while her nephew's family receives a thousand. Karen sees the game was rigged from the start.
She keeps her composure, planning to take Leo away before the surgery, but her sister-in-law accuses her of scheming to run. When Karen demands a divorce and moves to leave, Leigh admits he hid Leo hours ago and locked the gate. As she fights to reach her son, the family turns on her.
Trapped in a remote village with no one to back her, Karen must find a way to save Leo before the surgery—and herself.
Opening excerpt
My father-in-law had kidney failure and needed a transplant.
Both my son and my nephew were viable donors.
The family decided to settle it with "lucky" coin dumplings—whoever bit into the coin would give up their child's kidney.
I bit into a coin on my very first dumpling. Tears spilled down my cheeks instantly.
My husband said nothing. My mother-in-law reached over to take my bowl.
"My son is giving up a kidney, and I can't even finish eating?"
I had no appetite, but I didn't know what else to do.
"I'll get you a fresh bowl."
