Story

The story

For ten years, Kieran Grant has stood in the shadow of his wife, Natasha Bates, heiress of the Bates family and a formidable CEO. Everyone believes he is a gold-digger living off her success, forgetting that he is the company's sole major shareholder. Each Independence Day, he cooks a family meal; each year, Natasha refuses to join him.

This year, she spends the holiday with her childhood friend and male best friend, Stanley Rogers, posting intimate photos captioned with her happiness. Stanley bombards Kieran with more pictures and insults, calling him a freeloader. When Natasha demands Kieran apologize to Stanley, he refuses, and a phone call reveals her necklace left on Stanley's bed. Kieran asks for a divorce, breaking the promise he once made to never leave her.

As Natasha storms out, Kieran is left with the memory of the girl who once told him to stop crying and get stronger.

Opening excerpt

I had been married to Natasha Bates for ten years, and not once did she ever join me for our family's Independence Day cookout.

This year, on the night before the celebration, I finally gathered the courage to ask if she wanted to come.

She scoffed and said, "What are you, stuck in the past? Who even celebrates the Fourth with a family dinner anymore?"
