Story

The story

Celestina Sullivan is a wolfless, packless outcast taken in by Helene, a wealthy Italian woman who gave her the name of her late daughter. Haunted by nightmares and unable to reclaim her wolf, Celestina sneaks out of the Villa one night and meets a crimson-eyed stranger in the forest who calls her "Mate" — then rejects her, declaring he cannot take a powerless wolf even if she resembles another woman. She accepts his rejection, but the pain lingers.

Two weeks later, Helene introduces Alexander, a fair-haired man Celestina is expected to marry. Refusing to let anyone dictate her life, she flees into the forest, collides with someone, and wakes locked in a strange room. The door opens to the same man from that night, and he demands to know why she ran — but Celestina hates him for rejecting her and has no reason to stay.

Opening excerpt

My nightmares keep waking me up, and as much as I want to escape this suffering, I can't shake the feeling that it's slowly suffocating me to death. I opened my eyes and found myself gasping for air in the pitch black. I got down on the floor and crawled onto the bed, where I quickly put the heavy cover over my head.

I then heard something. A type of sound that could make me wonder what it was. When I looked around, I saw that the window was open. In the night sky, I could see the full moon shining brightly.
