Story

The story

On her birthday, Eleanor Smith receives a pink polaroid camera from her best friend, Bella Johnson. In a previous life, that gift led to ruin: her mother died in a car accident, her father was left paralyzed by a stroke, her company collapsed, and Oliver Taylor, her boyfriend, abandoned her as a jinx. Only after her own death did she learn that Bella and Oliver had been having an affair, and that Bella's sudden wealth and her parents' recovery were tied to the camera.

Now Eleanor has woken on the very day the camera was given. She accepts it without protest, hides her knowledge, and quietly obtains a second, identical camera. While Bella and Oliver press her to photograph her family, she goes to the zoo and turns the lens on the animals instead, keeping the three polaroid photos in her hand.

Bella and Oliver grow impatient for her to use the gift as they intend, and Eleanor must decide how to expose the couple and the camera's power before the fate of her past life repeats itself.

Opening excerpt

I took some photos of the animals in the zoo.

In my past life, I took the polaroid camera she had gifted me and happily took photos for my whole family.

Unexpectedly, after a week, my mother got into a car accident and passed away.

My father suffered from a stroke, which left half his body paralyzed even after treatment at the hospital.

The company that I was managing ran into problems and almost went bankrupt.

In merely a month, my hair had gone gray.
