Story

The story

On April Fool's Day, Harriet is handed a folded slip of paper by Bernice, her boyfriend Corey's female best friend, and dared to read its curse aloud on a livestream. In a past life, Harriet obeyed, and every vicious word came true: her sister was assaulted, her parents' bistro was ruined, her skin rotted, and Bernice took her followers, her boyfriend, and a fortune. Harriet swallowed sleeping pills and died.

Now she has woken on the same April Fool's Day, the ring light and camera before her. This time she refuses to be the only one playing. She writes her own slip for Bernice and demands it be read aloud to the two hundred thousand viewers. Corey shields Bernice, his friends mock Harriet, and the chat pressures her, but she holds her ground in the doorway, forcing Bernice to face the words she wrote.

Bernice pales and refuses to read, and Harriet will not let her leave until she does.

It was April Fool’s Day when my boyfriend’s female best friend shoved a piece of paper into my hands, daring me to read it aloud for the livestream.

In my past life, to keep the peace, I swallowed my pride and read the vicious words:
