Story
The story
Bruno has always booked two seats, one for himself and one for Isla, leaving Callie to find her own place on the train to New York. When Isla shares a lease with only her name and Bruno's, Callie learns she has been shut out of the future she once imagined. Bruno tells her not to overthink something so minor.
On the journey, Callie drags her own luggage while Bruno settles Isla with his jacket and the motion-sickness pills Callie had packed for herself. When a drunk stranger harasses her, Bruno hangs up and tells her to stop causing drama. At Penn Station he leaves with Isla, and Callie waits alone in the cold.
In their new apartment, the door code is Isla's birthday and the fridge is covered in notes in Bruno's handwriting. As Callie stands there like an uninvited guest, a message about her London application waits for her answer.
Opening excerpt
When tickets for the express train to New York went on sale, Bruno habitually ordered two.
One for himself.
One for Isla.
Only after locking in their seats did he turn to me and ask, "Callie, did you get your ticket?"
I froze.
On his screen, his seat was right next to Isla’s. When I opened the app a second later, the only remaining seat on the train was in the adjacent car.
I stared at the seat number, a sudden, hollow laugh catching in my throat.
