Story
The story
Dr. Evie Reed, the city's lead forensic psychologist, wakes on the second day of a new life, back at the moment her ruin began. In her last life she cracked the Rainy Day Ripper case, yet the killer escaped and another woman died. Her notes turned to nonsense, her husband Mark testified to a family history of mental illness, and she was committed, then strangled in her bed by a victim's relative. Lily, her protégée, took her place and her husband.
Now Lily brings her the same case and a thermos of Mark's broth. Beneath the herbs and chicken fat, Evie tastes the bitter chemical that once drugged her. She offers the soup to Lily and to Professor Albright, her old mentor, and watches their panic. Both knew. Mark's texts demand she solve the case for his promotion.
Her protégée, her mentor, her husband: all wanted her destroyed. Yet her profile of the killer was never wrong, and she still cannot see how they arranged her fall.
Opening excerpt
Just as the serial killer was about to slip through our fingers, I, the city’s lead forensic psychologist, was in a psychiatric ward, playing chess with an old man.
My phone buzzed. It was Lily, the deceptively sweet new consultant, her voice a desperate plea.
