Story

The story

Conor Hale has spent a year retaking the SAT, only to learn that Briarwood University already has a "Conor Hale" enrolled as an outstanding freshman. His mother, Meredith Hale, had told him he scored 1280 and failed to get in, while his childhood sweetheart, Cassidy Vaughn, promised to wait for him at Briarwood. Now he discovers his enrollment record was given to another boy, Gavin, who appears in his mother's and Cassidy's posts.

With only $7.30 in his pocket, Conor withdraws from his prep program and refuses his teacher Grant Sutton's offer to contact the Department of Education. He returns home to his father, Nathan Hale, and tells him the truth about the stolen record and his mother's affair.

As his father breaks down, Conor resolves to find out exactly what happened and to reclaim the future that was taken from him.

Opening excerpt

That same day, Cassidy Vaughn patted me on the shoulder and encouraged me, "Conor, take another year and try again.
