Story

The story

Vanessa Rowe is a young trader whose colleague Calvin Granger begs her to invest his salary for him, insisting he trusts her and will never blame her for losses. For three years he sends her his full monthly pay, and she manages it while he plays the grateful mentor.

Then his mother is hospitalized and Calvin demands 500,000 dollars back. Vanessa says he already withdrew every cent, but Calvin, his wife Diane Granger and colleague Lena Whitmore turn the office against her, calling her a thief. Diane storms into Vanessa's home, ransacks her closet and smears ink on the walls while neighbors join in, and the pair spread the story online.

Vanessa has the withdrawal records to prove her innocence, yet the crowd keeps shouting her down. With her reputation and home in ruins, she must decide how far she will go to make them all pay.

Opening excerpt

“We should all make money together. I’ll transfer the money to you—just help me buy what you’re buying. We’re colleagues. I trust you with this,” he said.

“I know what I’m doing,” he added. “Even if I lose money, I won’t blame you.”

“And when I earn, I’ll treat you to a good meal.”
