A House Without a Place for Me

Moving day, and the Phillips family gathers at a brand-new three-story house in the suburbs. Benjamin hands out shiny new keys to his sons Garrett and Aaron, to their partners Vanessa and Jessica, and even to Maria, the housekeeper of fifteen years. Everyone, that is, except his daughter Sandra, who stands at the edge of the group with an empty hand and no explanation.

Vanessa's poisoned-sweet remarks cut at Sandra's career and her place in the family, while Benjamin's cryptic line about who the house really belongs to lands on her alone. At dinner he assigns every room—master, east wing, west wing, guest suite—and never once says her name. Sandra leaves, and back in her cramped city rental, the mask finally drops.

She has spent her life earning straight A's, scholarships and a director's title, chasing a pride her parents never gave. Belonging, it seems, was never hers to hold.
