Story
The story
Naomi has planned her wedding for six months, down to the hand-embroidered gown she stitched herself. At four o'clock, the music starts and her groom, Zach, is missing. A video in the family group chat shows him kneeling before her cousin, Cindy, while her relatives cheer and her mother tells her to step aside and let Cindy have this.
Zach calls to explain that Cindy is severely depressed and that her only tether to life is wearing a wedding dress once. He asks Naomi, the strong and sensible one, to let the ceremony happen for Cindy, promising to sign the papers at the courthouse later. Her mother warns that if Naomi makes a scene, she is no longer her daughter.
Naomi hands over the gown and watches her family celebrate another woman in her place, demanding she apologize and be kind. She lifts a glass of red wine as Zach shields Cindy from her.
Opening excerpt
At that exact moment, my mother sent a video to our family group chat.
In the clip, Zach was down on one knee, proposing to my cousin, Cindy.
The living room in the video was packed with relatives cheering and clapping. My father stood right beside them, his face stretched into a wide, beaming grin.
