Story

The story

After her husband Edmund is murdered and dismembered, Evelaine notices their dog Tilly taking on his habits—fetching her slippers, tucking her in, massaging her back. The family sees it as a touching sign, but Evelaine calls a dog meat restaurant and gives Tilly away, to her daughter Candace's and the family's horror.

At Candace's graduation banquet, Evelaine reveals why: she dials the police and confesses to murdering Edmund, producing the bloodstained knife. As relatives and onlookers erupt in outrage, Candace begs to know if she was threatened, but Evelaine refuses to explain.

Candace jumps from the window, and Evelaine is left with the sense that everything is finally over.

Opening excerpt

When I came home, he would fetch my slippers and place them neatly by the door.

At night, he’d drag a blanket over and tuck me in.

When I sat on the couch, he’d pat my back and massage it with his paws.

These were all my husband’s habits.

Edmund was known as a model husband. In twenty years of marriage, he never once let me into the kitchen, always cooking my favorite dishes. He took time off work to be with me during thunderstorms because he knew I was afraid.
