Story

The story

After her year-end bonus, Chloe buys her grad-student boyfriend Brad a pair of limited-edition Jordans, wrapped in matte grey paper she chose herself. The next day the same shoes appear on Facebook Marketplace for a fraction of the price, unopened, and the seller's profile leads straight back to Brad. Scrolling further, she finds every gift she ever gave him listed and sold: headphones, a gaming console, an iPad Pro, even the scarf she knitted by hand, priced at ten dollars.

When a message mentions a birthday gift for his girlfriend, Chloe realises he is cheating as well as cashing in on her. She buys the shoes back through Sarah's address, confirms receipt, then tells Brad she hid a vintage Patek Philippe watch inside the box. His panic, and his sudden talk of status and internships, tell her everything.

She has no intention of letting him off easily.

After getting my year-end bonus, I bought my grad student boyfriend a pair of limited-edition Jordans.

I didn't expect to see them listed on Facebook Marketplace the very next day for twenty percent of the price. The box wasn't even opened.

I bought them immediately. After confirming the pickup, I called my boyfriend.

"Babe, do you like the little surprise I got you?"

Brad sounded confused. "What surprise?"

I smiled, feigning disappointment.

"I hid a vintage Patek Philippe watch inside the shoe box.
