Story
The story
When Naomi's mother arrives in Boston for treatment of sudden deafness in one ear, Naomi brings her home. Her husband Zachary orders the older woman to wear plastic medical booties, tells her to take her phone call outside, and complains about her to a friend over their game. Yet Cheryl, a sweaty friend fresh from tennis, is welcomed with a towel and his private bathroom.
After checking her mother into the hospital, Naomi confronts Zachary. He calls the booties trivial and suggests her mother may be faking her illness, while Cheryl mocks her as an old parasite. When Naomi slaps Cheryl, Zachary threatens to freeze the funds for her mother's surgery unless she apologizes.
Naomi asks for a divorce. Zachary warns her that marrying him was her ticket out of the sticks, then offers to talk, insisting Cheryl is only crashing with them while she job-hunts. Naomi hands him her water glass and throws his favorite mug in the bin.
Opening excerpt
But the very first thing my husband said to her was when she was on the phone.
"Keep it down, would you?"
Mom froze. She gave him a timid, apologetic look, her weathered face forcing a tight, fragile smile. Her hand trembled as she hung up the call.
"I’m so sorry, Zachary. I’ll go outside to finish."
She hunched her shoulders, her back curved under the weight of her coat.
