The story
One evening, a man's wife brings home a Tibetan Mastiff, and from that moment the two are inseparable. Yet his wife, Regina, is deathly allergic to dog dander—years earlier, a single pat of his small dog sent her to the emergency room. Now she buries her face in the massive beast's coat without a sniffle, and calls the hundred-pound animal her baby. The woman looks exactly like Regina, but he knows she is not his wife.
Before this, Regina made him promise that if she ever stopped fearing dogs, he must take their daughter Zoe and run. As the imposter feeds the dog scraps, whispers low chants over its bowl, and hums unfamiliar lullabies to Zoe, he secretly dials Regina's number—only to hear it ring from the sofa cushions. The police would never believe him.
