Love Repositioned

At her sister-in-law Luna's twenty-first birthday party, Nelly is handed a drugged drink and a set of divorce papers. Luna tells her a country girl who never finished high school has no right to carry a Thorne heir. Nelly's husband, Caleb Thorne, is across the room with another woman, Vivian, and does not come to her aid. The drug takes her unborn child, and the guests draw back from the blood spreading on the marble floor.

Nelly signs the papers. Ten years earlier, after his parents were murdered and his inheritance stolen, Caleb came to her village and begged her grandmother, a woman with the Sight, to curse his uncles. The magic cost her grandmother's life, and Caleb swore at her coffin that Nelly would be his only wife for all his life. Now his world calls her unworthy, and Vivian's mother says a maid could do what she does.

As midnight marks their tenth anniversary, Nelly gathers the pieces of her grandmother's last letter, which she was told to open only on that day, and walks out of the house.
