Story

The story

When Ethan Vance breaks off his engagement to Elara Sterling, everyone expects her to crumble. For five years she reshaped herself to please him, ruining her reputation in the Capital City, only to be discarded for Seraphina Hayes, a girl who reminds him of the innocent Elara he once loved. Yet Elara does not beg. She returns his keepsake box and the jade bangles of their engagement, leaves no trace behind, and prepares a quiet escape of her own.

She has already knelt a full night to win her father's consent to take her younger sister's place in an arranged marriage to Dorian Thorne, eldest son of the Thornes of Portsmouth, a man said to be ruthless, cunning, and wheelchair-bound. As Ethan's engagement approaches and the whispers grow cruel, Elara steps into a new household and a new husband, while Ethan begins to wonder why she has made no sound at all.

Opening excerpt

When Ethan Vance broke off our engagement, everyone said my life was over. For five years, I’d bent myself into knots to please him, and my reputation was already in tatters. No one, they claimed, would ever want a woman like me.

When Ethan found new love, those around me waited for me to grovel, to beg for him back. But they didn't know I had willingly taken my younger sister’s place, marrying into a family in Portsmouth through an arranged marriage.

Before I left, I returned the treasured keepsake box Ethan had given me, along with the blank promise card he had penned as a boy.
