Story

The story

At the first-birthday party for her adopted sister Sylvia Dawson's daughter, Claire Dawson watches her secret husband of three years, Austin Quinlan, rock the child with practised ease. When Sylvia rests a hand on Austin's chest and calls him husband in Portuguese, Claire freezes: she minored in Portuguese, and she understands every word. Her parents hand over a gift and take the baby without a hitch, revealing they have known for a year.

Dragged upstairs and locked in a storage room, Claire confronts Austin with what she has heard. He stops pretending, and when Sylvia throws herself at him, he strikes Claire and threatens to cancel their bridal photos. Sylvia whispers that the name on Claire's marriage certificate is hers.

Claire slaps Austin and walks out, refusing her cousin Meredith's offer of revenge. She intends to handle it herself.

I thought he was finally going to announce who I was. I walked toward him, giddy with it. "Honey—"

Before I could finish, Sylvia leaned in from the side, her hand settling naturally against Austin's chest, and spoke in Portuguese.
