Story

The story

At her mother's funeral, Victoria's fiancé Matt Moore arrives with Kayla Wood and announces their engagement is over, leaving her humiliated before the crowd. Her childhood friend Zach Hayden then kneels and proposes, and she accepts.

Three years into the marriage, Victoria remains childless. Zach gently insists it does not matter, but she overhears him and the family doctor: the contraceptives he ordered are still being given to her, and he calls the marriage a convenient arrangement, saying only Kayla is worthy of being the mother of his child. The doctor warns the long-term pills may make conceiving impossible; Zach accepts that.

Victoria discovers she is pregnant, then finds Zach's laptop and bank accounts unlocked by Kayla's birthday, filled with Kayla's photos and monthly payments. She begins to question the love she believed in.

Opening excerpt

At my mother's funeral, my fiancé, Matt Moore, arrived with Kayla Wood to pay his respects.

In front of everyone, he announced that our engagement was over. He was going to marry Kayla instead.

As the whispers and laughter of the crowd swirled around me, Zach Hayden, my childhood friend, suddenly knelt on one knee and proposed. He said he had loved me for many years.

Moved by Zach's sincerity, I accepted his proposal.
