Story

The story

A new teacher arrives at a preschool, and the parents' WhatsApp group fills with praise: the children are suddenly polite, well-behaved, and no longer picky eaters. But one mother's daughter, Maya, whispers a secret — that the children are only good because they are afraid to die, and that a boy named Duke was taken away and killed for sneaking chips during nap time.

The mother dismisses it as a child's wild imagination, especially when Duke's mother sends a photo of her son behaving like an angel. Yet Maya insists the boy in the photo is not Duke — he is using his right hand, while Duke was left-handed. As the adults argue over what is real and what is a lie, a mother's certainty begins to crack, and the truth behind the children's strange obedience may be far darker than anyone wants to believe.

Opening excerpt

A new teacher started at my daughter’s preschool, and the parents’ WhatsApp group was buzzing with praise. Everyone said their kids had become polite, well-behaved, and less picky with food.

But that night, my daughter Maya whispered a secret to me:

“They’re only good because they’re afraid to die.”

She said Duke was taken away and killed for sneaking chips during nap. “When he died, his mouth was stuffed with chips and his belly was bloated.”
