Story

The story

Ten months pregnant, Eleanor Vance goes into labor in the dead of night. Her husband Ryan Brooke, a professional race car driver, takes her to the hospital in a taxi, but when she begs him to drive faster, he refuses, saying he is no chauffeur. Her water breaks in the back seat, yet he only moves to the passenger side.

At the hospital, Eleanor needs an emergency C-section, but Ryan has vanished. She signs the consent form herself and endures the surgery without proper anesthesia, biting her lip to keep from screaming. As she hemorrhages, the doctors reach Ryan by phone, only to hear him dismiss her pain and turn his attention to another woman calling him darling.

It is her mother's voice that pulls Eleanor back from the brink. After ten hours, she survives, but learns her baby did not. As she grieves, nurses gossip about Ryan Brooke, the city's top driver, who ran ten red lights to rush his girlfriend to the hospital.
